Practice for Sequential Art
A participatory live-drawing demonstration with guest Ziyed
at the Comics Art Festival of Eugene (CAFE)
How does drawing from real life help you make comics?
This Sunday I will demonstrate how to compromise time and visual consistency for the purpose of a sequential piece of art.
Draw along a series of short exercises and explore observation drawing as a practice for sequential art.
Sequence artwork includes comic books, webtoons, graphic novels, storyboards and any form of art that happens in a sequence of drawings. Sequential art forces us to simplify figures, objects and movement so that the artwork communicates the sequence clearly. Watch the practice in action or bring a sketchbook and your blackest pen.
Learn a practice to improve your own drawing skill. Sharpen your hand-eye coordination and develop your own original shortcuts. We'll explore the links between style and study, questions like: What can be simplified? What makes an action readable within a page? How little information can still communicate a figure or object?
Beginners and observers are welcome.
This live-drawing demonstration is part of Ziyed's art project Observation Station.
